In the years 1990-2004, the city experienced a pace of development and an increase in population, mainly due to the arrival of many families from different areas of Albania. In 1999, the population was 26,512 inhabitants. Under the Ottoman regime, Saranda became the private property of Sultan Abdyl Hamit by a decree of the High Gate. During the rule of Benitto Mussolini, the city of Saranda took the name “Porto Eda”, for the sake of his daughter. After World War II, some high-ranking officials of the communist regime had the town as their tourist and hunting retreat.
